Some of you here, reading this article are already succeeding in your various careers (programming, basketball, football, medicine, research, engineering etc) and various spheres of life. To some, there is this intrinsic value associated with their sense of being which is in tandem to their career which they call passion. Finding your passion seems easier than done.
Some end up chasing the money and luckily get hold of it but still feel unfulfilled. Some actually do believe that their hobby is their passion or purpose in life. With all the nuances associated with peoples perspective of passion, there seems to be a general link and that is love.
THE UNDULATING NATURE OF OUR INTEREST LOOKING BACK
Taking a conscious look at the past down to your childhood, how many passions have you ticked off your bucket list. I could remember having the ambition of becoming a doctor, an aeronautic engineer, a veterinary doctor, a musician to list a few.
But currently, I don’t have a gleam of that desire lingering in my mind. Finding my passion wasn’t an instant epiphany but was a gradual process.
It seems funny how all these were taken seriously at the moment as a speculative ambition to be worked for and now no fragment can be seen. We end up going for these goals and intensifying desires without having the overarching ingredient. Most times our passion changes with time.
The problem becomes to locking in on one and deliberately setting up your mind to improve on it. Finding your passion can be frustrating at times without a purpose.
MONEY AND FULFILMENT
To some their passion is equated exclusively to anything(job) that generates income for them. And this seems to be a myopic perspective. With time they end up being subjected to the outpouring of rancour.
They are also subjected to the monotony and being refrained from building up that uniqueness in them. Finding your passion and purpose can be disillusioned when money is at the centre of everything.
When the Dalai Lama was asked what surprised him the most about humanity he responded and said that it is “Man” because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.
And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
Our chase and desire to acquire money only takes us so far. Once this goal is achieved your introspection still defines you as an empty being. Jim Carrey from the movie, “Bruce Almighty” said that he thinks everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it’s not the answer”.
Besides what defines being poor is when what you have isn’t sufficient for you that is why a lot of people that are tagged rich generally by the masses are in debt and need neither are they contented with what they have. They might be dressed in luxury apparels, expensive cars or houses but still feel empty.
While some monks living the simplest of lives still feel happy and satisfied. In our contemporary society, we see lots of people that are famous and at the peak of their careers. We quickly equate their money and material accomplishment to their sense of happiness to be specific, their sense of mental comfort. We should all strive to achieve a state of mental comfort.
Let us take a look at this scenario to describe the possession of mental comfort, physical comfort/material comfort and the possession of both.
There are three men: A, B and C. They are about to go for a job interview. “A” has a stunning looking car with faulty engine, “B” has a stunning engine with the exterior not that appealing(average), and “C” has a stunning engine with a beautiful exterior design. On their way, people hailed “A” for having a beautiful car.
People didn’t really understand the turmoil he experienced in driving the car. As you may have guessed, the faulty engine disappointed “A” before he reached the interview and was screened out. People didn’t really pay much attention to “B” but B was confident that he would reach on time and won’t be forestalled from reaching his destination, he was also happy knowing that his car is competent enough to deliver the job. Luckily for him, he eventually got the job.
B got the attention of everyone but was more satisfied with the aesthetic nature of his car, he was also confident that his car was up to the job. He succeeded in getting the job. The scenario stated above can be interpreted in various ways but what I am trying to convey is that we should not only crave for physical comfort.
FINDING YOUR PASSION
We all have this aptitude that is within our brain’s working frequency that we call talent. Some people do think that passions or dreams should not be something outside this zone and that is a wrong mindset. The ability of the brain to adapt, change and form new connections to things makes it very remarkable.
The neuroplasticity of our brain makes it possible to lock on to something and create new neural networks through constant practice. To find our passions, firstly we need to come up with a resolution of what we love and not what we are good at. Yh I said that because what you are good at might not be what you love or willing to put in the dedication for improvement in the long haul.
If the answer is within your talent and natural frequency then the skill set required would be easy for you to improve on. If your answer is outside your talent then you need to man up and take that bold decision of working and subjecting your self to the training required to get there. And with time you would look back and be elated at your accomplishments. Multiple passions could be craved for if you have the determination to stick to them but if not narrow down your passion to an element.
CREATING YOUR PURPOSE
Solving the milestone of finding your passion shouldn’t be the end. You should strive to also answer the question of what is the purpose behind my passion. We are fundamentally wired to love, to help, to show compassion and that is why when we commit to putting a smile on someones face, we feel fulfilled and happy.
You can resort to charity, education, sponsoring of research works geared towards the advancement of humanity. Believe me, once you set your mind to create your purpose on any of the sectors geared towards the advancement of humanity you feel fulfilled. Bask in the light and live a purposeful life.
